Tai Chi at Home or In Class: Finding the Right Balance

Some people don’t want the social side of a Tai Chi class.

I remember when I was first learning Tai Chi, one of the instructors would get quite impatient with a small group that were reluctant to stop chatting!

True, they were not terribly serious about learning, but they did come every week, they did move about a bit, and they did make new social connections (which even in the early 2000s was a thing). But they did also hold up the teaching for the rest of us!

It’s a really fine balance. For the first time in a while I have had to mark a class as full as it’s too disruptive for the regular class to have new people in right now. But I hate doing it!

Learning Tai Chi at Home

Some people don’t actually want to come to an in-person Tai Chi class at all.

I spoke with a lady earlier this week who just wanted some information on my online Tai Chi course as she had multiple fears and anxieties about being in front of people, and she wanted to be able to try Tai Chi in the comfort of her own home.

For the cost of a couple of in-person Tai Chi classes, she now has access to a wealth of written and visual information.

I like all of my groups because of the people, but it often means I can’t really practice the way I would like because that’s not where my focus has to be.

So sometimes I’ll take a bit of time after class and have a bit of ‘me’ time.

I get the best of both worlds – and the beauty of Tai Chi is that you can too! You can take Tai Chi and do it ANYWHERE you like, away from distractions and people (if you need to).
